Making A Fashion Footprint

When was the last time you read the About Us section on an online store you shopped at? In that section, did it provide a section called Responsibilities? If you happened to see this section, did you read it? Well, I did. And I'll tell you why.

I read an excerpt from Kelly Cutrone's book Normal Gets You Nowhere a couple of days ago. One thing she talked about was how we, as Americans are very unaware of a lot of things in our world. We go about our days spending time thinking about our lives, the lives of those who are close to us, the lives of the Kardashians, what we want to wear, eat, and where we want to party at...And a lot of us (not all) are blithely unaware that we are unconsciously making a choice to stand by and be apart of something when we are absorbed in all of that. We make the choice without ever really deciding to make it. It's made for us because we have so many things that we focus our attention on. Things that do deserve our attention..but things that we never delve deeper into because we don't really think about the fact that it goes further than us.

As a teenage girl, you're not thinking about why Forever 21 is able to sell you cute clothes so cheaply. All you care about is you can shop and get things that you like. You walk into a store, see this great deal on a dress and you're happy that you can purchase something you like without having to spend too much of your money. You buy it, and leave the store. And it ends there.

I know all too well because I was that girl. imagine how disgusted I was with myself when I found out the truth!

But what you don't know is that someone your age, probably even in the country that you live in is working to make you that dress. And they get paid barely nothing. Their working conditions are filthy. They aren't like the ones you have at your job that you hate because your boss is a bitch. They may not have bathrooms or lunch breaks. Basic human rights. And instead of buying dresses, they're scraping together their pay for a meal that isn't going to satisfy them.

The store that plays the upbeat music, providing an atmosphere that the average teenage girl will like, and has all the great, cheap clothes is the same corporation that is allowing people to live this way. It's like getting a huge, creepy smiley face on a test that you completely bombed. You get your paper back with this big ass smiley face on it, and when you remove the sticker, you find a huge, red 'F'. If you're like any normal person, you're gonna put the smiley face back over the 'F' because you want to look at the smiley face rather than be reminded of your failing grade.

Sucks when you think about it that way, huh? And that's why companies get to keep running morality and human rights into the ground. Because we just keep smiling and ignoring the big, red problem. Either by knowing about it and not caring, or not caring enough to know about it. I won't even talk about how many times they've been accused of stealing designs. As if being a young and unknown designer isn't hard enough, you have a multi-billion dollar corporation stealing your ideas and mass producing them, giving you absolutely no credit whatsoever. Talk about a crime of fashion.

I was on Topshop.com today, browsing. And I started adding a few things to my cart. I went to my cart to review what I had and thought about Kelly's words. So I went to the About Us section. Then I went to the Responsibilities section. And I started to read.

Even though I love the stuff they have at Topshop, I can rarely shop it. It's a bit pricey for me at the moment, but I use a lot of their stuff for Polyvore sets or just when I feel like online window shopping. (Yes, people do that). I never resented Topshop for being pricey because I am a firm believer in the phrase "You get what you pay for". They have so many nice things there and they're priced highly for a reason. Sometimes it can get a bit ridiculous, but most of the time, I think things are fairly pricey.

This is what I read: (Excuse my laziness, I don't feel like paraphrasing)

You can also check out their Fashion Footprint FAQs here.

After reading this, I decided to support Topshop 100% and try to shop there a little more often. I also decided to check out the other brands that are participants of Fashion Footprint Social Responsibility. It's worth it to support a brand who sells things priced a little higher than I can afford when they are apart of a bigger mission. I respect that more than a great sale (which they do have from time to time). Now, I just want more stores and corporations to do the same! Maybe if we put a little pressure on them, things will change. TIME magazine named The Protester person of the year for a reason. We can do it if we're committed enough.

I hope that you took the time to read that because I find it EXTREMELY important to be informed on the companies that you are supporting. It's also important to remember that each time you shop somewhere or purchase something from a company, you are, whether you know it or not, standing behind that company's values and code of ethics. How can you stand by something you know nothing about? So here's a challenge. Create your own Fashion Footprint. Get informed on the main places that you shop at and what they stand for. Just being more aware can make the world a better place.

If Anyone Was Wondering, I'm Still Alive

Hello, all. I've been absent from my blog and from social networks for the past couple of weeks. I won't go into why. I love all my readers, but some things are just too personal, and while I'm sure my tragic story would pull at your heartstrings or even entertain you (you can laugh at my pain. I will get over it), it's just not gonna happen.

I've been thinking. About life. About love. About what's really important in life. I've been making life-changing decisions, one after the other. I'm a nineteen year old American black girl...and I'm figuring out what a lot of shit means to me and to my future. I've been letting my own problems get the best of me. While these are huge problems I'm dealing with, I just feel like I let them defeat me for a moment. I've realized that the world that I live in, the country I populate, the neighborhood I reside in...is in a dire crisis. And all of that is much bigger than me and my personal problems. And I can no longer blankly standing by, letting these things go on. I just can't do it. My lack of humanitarianism is seriously taking a toll on me.

I don't know. I just can't even stomach spending my time on Facebook or Twitter. Because nearly everyone I've friended or followed is completely self-absorbed-(like I was before I had this epiphany) and completely desensitized to all of the corruption going on in the planet they inhabit. And it kind of sickens me.

Disclaimer: Don't worry, I'm not turning into one of those pretentious hipsters who thinks everyone who wears nice clothes and talks about reality TV is irrelevant. This is, after all, a fashion blog. And as adamant as I am about getting involved in human rights causes, I still believe in Chanel. I can help out the cause and look good whilst doing so, right? Lol. What does that make me? I don't care. I am who I am. An advocate of the arts. And fashion is art. Therefore, I believe in it and shall not foresake it just because I'm diving into activism mode.

Okay, now that THAT little tyraid is done....Where was I going with this? ............. Oh yeah. So I've had all these epiphanies lately. I've made all of these discoveries about myself and about the world around me through my pain. And so that's what I've been focused on. My posts won't be as plentiful to you three people who faithfully read this blog, and for that, I apologize. I appreciate every single one of you. But there are more important things that I need to give my attention to. I'll post every now and again and I hope that I get your support with that.

I hope all my readers are doing extremely well and prospering during the holidays. (You CAN expect a Christmas post. I'm not the Grinch). I love you. Be good, everyone.

Jason Never Fails to 'Wu'

 source: style.com
Today, I struggled and failed to see the Oscar de la Renta pre-fall collection through the live stream. I was disheartened seeing all of the people I follow on Twitter gaping, oohing and ahhing at the greatness that is Oscar. But hey, you can't have it all. Well, not entirely true. You can have it all, just not at the same time.

To lick my wounds, I went to Style.com to see what was new and decided to check out Jason Wu's pre-fall collection that debuted a few days ago. And as I clicked through the slides, I experienced just what fashion therapy is. Leather collars, color blocked menswear inspired outerwear, printed metallic trousers and matching blazers that are immaculately tailored (I die), and houndstooth (I died twice). I mean, I was literally lost in myself. It was everything a girl like me could ever want in a wardrobe.

Inspired by Indian maharajas and the colorful illustrations of Charley Harper (an artist noted for his bold, graphic depictions of nature-style.com), the collection definitely doesn't lack color, imagination, or creativity. But while Nicole Phelps of Style.com thinks that the collection differentiates from his last in the sense that it's not edgy, I kind of disagree. She described the collection as regal. While I do agree with that sentiment, I also see edgy. It may be Wu's distinct aesthetic, or that damn printed metallic blazer that makes me think this, but I think edgy still describes this collection to an extent.

Looking back at Jason Wu's previous collections, you notice just how good the cuts and silhouettes are. He keeps that in everything that he does. The clothes are luxury, but they're still so fucking cool. His girl likes to make a statement, but not in a street style attention whore, sort of way. She's just going about her day, handling her business and still looks great without trying too hard.

Isn't it special seeing a collection that you can whole-heartedly confess your love to? And unlike people, you don't ever have to be scared that the clothes don't love you back.

6 Gift Ideas Under 15 Bucks

With Christmas right around the corner, I thought I'd post on some stocking stuffers or secret Santa gift ideas. These are all awesome gifts under $15. They may be pricier elsewhere, but on Amazon, you're guaranteed these low prices. (Judge me all you want, I am an Amazon junkie. Thought I'd convert some of you as well).

M83's become one of my new favorites. You might recognize their song Midnight City from the Victoria's Secret commercial. Their album Hurry Up, We're Dreaming is so, so good. It's so good that "so, so good" is the only way I decided to describe it. This is the perfect gift idea for alternative music lovers or someone you're trying to introduce to another genre of music. You guys should check out their previous stuff, too. So good.

Aussie Smooth 3 Minute Miracle only costs like, $4.00 and it works like a DREAM. I look forward to washing my hair now due to this product. Really helps my hair feel great and easier to manage. Plus it smells great!

What girl couldn't use a brush kit? And for one priced this well, you definitely can't pass it up.
Clinique makes everyone happy. And isn't this a great holiday color?
Burberry Body smells amazing, if you didn't know. A small vial for $9.00 will last someone longer than you think! Perfect stocking stuffer.
Butter London is just tops! It's a bit pricey for nail varnish, but hey: you get what you pay for. (This totally defeats the purpose of this post, in a way. But whatever)

5 Tips For Newbies to the Fashion Realm

For some of us, fashion was a thing before it became our whole world. Something we were merely interested in, but not a huge part of our life. Or am I just speaking for myself? Anyway, I thought I'd share a few tips for those of you who are kind of new to the fashion realm.

# 1 Know Your Sizes in Other Countries
 source: vans-shop.net

There's nothing worse than going to get one of the last pair of Dalmatian spotted boots and just as you find the chart on the site and figure out your size, they're out of stock. It happens. Especially during promotions and sale time. Those hot items sell out within minutes and just your luck: it's your size they've run out of. Knowing your size in all countries is just important period. Once you start to travel and discover brands that are foreign (and you will), you'll want to know right off the bat what size to ask for in Italian, French, American, Indonesian...Need I go on?

#2 Don't Be A Fashion Snob
 source: favim.com

If there's one thing we all hate, it's when someone name drops becomes a complete label whore in order to showcase that she's now apart of the fashion realm. Your new-found knowledge of brands should be apart of your journey. It should not be a form of bragging.

#3 Keep Up With Trends, Don't Live By Them
 source:rawinformationgroup.blogspot.com

Being inspired by trends is something many of us do. Whether by religiously reading fashion magazines or getting our info from the blogs and major fashion sites. Trendy items and it-bags are something we all come in contact with, and sometimes develop relationships with. (At some point in your life, you will look back at an old photo of something you once wore and loved and like an ex, you'll scream to yourself "What was I thinking?".) There's no specific way to find out what "your style" is. There are plenty of ideas you can use, like gathering iconic images and seeing what speaks to you, or giving yourself a tighter budget when you shop so that you only buy the things that truly tug at your heart. The point is to take trends into account...but learn to discern if a trend you're starting to pick up on is really YOU.

#4 Learn To Form An Opinion
 source: 123rf.com

I think that this is important for anyone, honestly. In any situation, knowing truly is half the battle. You may come into fashion thinking that it's about what's visual and what you see. And that's true. But understanding is key. And to understand means to take the time to learn and take different things into account. That's how you discover more about yourself. This is all relative to making informed decisions and really having discernment. (There's that word again. It's so important! Plus I just like using it.)

#5 "Be Glamorous and Genuine"
 source: starrynightsxoxo.tumblr.com

"Clothes are just a nice envelope, but it's more important, the letter, inside the envelope". Carine Roitfeld, former editor of Paris Vogue and esteemed stylist, author, etc, etc....said these words in a video that she did for i-D (see here), shot by Mario Sorrenti. She also said something to the effect of she wanted to show that someone could be glamorous and genuine. As a woman who has made such a great contribution to art and fashion, her elegance is defined by more than her impeccable style and her incredible body of work (I'd describe both as pretty badass). She prides herself in being a genuine person. As someone who decides to follow a career in fashion, or someone who is just decides to have a keen interest in it, people will judge, label and compartmentalize you. It's the way of the world. But the way that you define yourself is what truly matters.

So go forth, look fierce, and be the most positive person you can be in the process. Remember kids, the world of fashion comes with a price. If you decide to sell your soul...well, at least get some Chanel out of it.

Thanksgiving and....

Hello you lovely people! It's Thanksgiving night here in Michigan. I was gonna wait until tomorrow to blog but something told me to just do it tonight. I'm not busy. This post is just a short one filled with a few personal photos. Some are from yesterday and some are from today. I didn't bring my camera with me to my aunt's house, where we ate. I didn't regret it until I went to my other aunt's house for a short moment and saw this amazing sequin pillow that I knew you guys would probably LOVE. *sigh*. So, I'll just have to hope that I can get a snap shot on Christmas when I go back! At any rate, my holiday was fine as I have many things to be thankful for. I hope you guys had an awesome time with your loved ones and ate GOOD. Enough of my rambling, here are the photos from yesterday.

I'm wearing my trusty black leather jacket from Newport News that my mom gave to me awhile back, a sweater by David Paul New York, also gifted to me by my lovely mother, and a plain black long-sleeved Tee. (I love how my sweater looks with leather. Doesn't it give it a little bit of life, or is it just me?) My scarf was a gift from W magazine for subscribing lol I like it! And it's actually really warm. Two-finger bird ring from Charlotte Russe, three gold rings gifted. Nightmoth lip-liner and Ruby Woo by MAC on my lips, by the way. (Also thought I'd note that I love the way my eye-liner came out yesterday and it's thanks to one of my favorite YouTuber's, Shirley Beniang. You guys should really check out her channel, she's great!)

Okay, on to my Thanksgiving outfit.
It's a gown from Urban Outfitters which I haven't gotten a chance to wear until today. It's so pretty and it fits me like a glove! I wore it with my Steve Madden moccasins to keep it understated.

A closer look at my make up. I did a dramatic eye with Maybelline eye studio in 'Flash of Forest' cream shadows and L'oreal Matte Shadow Duo in 'Dashing' and an understated lip with MAC lip glass in 'Spirited'.

Disclaimer
Guys, just because you have a nice camera, doesn't mean your photos will always turn out great. I really wish I had someone experienced to take my photos. Usually, it's family members and such who really don't know what to do. It's not their fault. Lol. I hope you all enjoy the photos anyway. (I actually took the photos from yesterday myself and had the camera on a timer. Did they come out okay? Let me know if you prefer those and I'll do that from now on).

At any rate, I hope you all are having great holidays and I hope to hear from you all soon!

Current Fab Fixations

Update
Hi guys! I've been gone for a while and haven't updated you guys on much. It's the end of the semester and school is...school. Lol. The semester started off terribly for me. I'm also in a transitional period in my life right now. Making decisions and kind of trying to see where the wind blows me, if that makes any sense. At any rate, as you can see, I've re-designed my blog. I think it now reflects me and my growth and taste now. The header's fashion illustration was designed by the amazing Hayden Williams, he was kind enough to let me use it. Follow him and his work here on Twitter

I've also been experimenting with recording YouTube videos. *sigh* Lol. It's not for everyone, I'm afraid. I think I'm going to stick to expressing myself to you guys through my written posts.

Anyway, this post is about a few of my current lusts and such fashion and beauty-wise. I had interview with a company called Aritzia last week and I have a good feeling about it. They carry such great stuff, like this T.Baton Ryan coat. The tailoring is impeccable and it's a piece that I think I'd wear until I simply couldn't any more! Made of Italian wool and cashmere, this minimalist, menswear inspired silhouette is totally on trend and will serve any girl tried and true through the cold months.

Fab Fixations & sartorial desires

I want a cape so badly, I can't wait til I find one I fall in love with (and can afford). The M Missoni tiger-print caught my eye at first glance. Who knows, maybe someone will gift it to me (Yeah, right)

I've been loving Nicholas Kirkwood's shoe designs for about a year now. He is still my absolute FAVORITE shoe designer. These black, leather fringed wedge boots are so rad. They're delicious and so fucking cool. I could go on forever about how much I am in love with them.

Tom Ford's beauty product line just debuted not too long ago and I'd love to give some of his lipstick a try. I've recently become a bit make up crazed, so this is nothing surprising. (Right now my favorite products are Nightmoth lip liner and Ruby Woo lipstick from MAC. They're a little less pricey than the Tom Ford products :).

Check out the rest of the items I'm lusting for down below and tell me what you think of these picks! Love them? Hate them? Know of anything you think is better? Comment and let me know. AND if you have any posts with your own sartorial desires, link me and share :) Take care, guys.
